Will encapsulation change how my stained glass looks?

When homeowners ask about encapsulation, the first practical question is usually about drafts. The second, and often the one they care about more, is whether it's going to change the look of a window they love. It's a fair thing to worry about. The whole reason you're keeping the original glass is the character, and nobody wants to trade that away for comfort.

From the inside, it looks like the same window

The short answer is that it looks like the same window, because it is the same window. The colours, the lead lines, and the texture of the glass are all unchanged. Nothing gets painted, coated, or rebuilt. Your original leaded panel simply sits sealed between two panes of clear glass, and from inside the room the light still comes through it the way it always has.

What actually changes

The honest answer is that there's a little more surface reflection, because there's now an outer pane of clear glass in front of the original. In certain light, especially viewed from outside, you might notice the outer glass catching a reflection the way any modern window does. But the coloured glass still glows, the texture still reads, and the character of the panel comes through. Most people stop noticing the outer pane almost immediately.

The original panel is protected, not altered

If anything, encapsulation looks after the original glass rather than changing it. Sealed inside the unit, the leaded panel is no longer taking direct rain, snow, and sun the way it was before. The character you're trying to preserve is exactly what's being protected. For a heritage window that's meant to look like it's always been there, that matters. From the street it reads the same, and it'll keep reading that way for a lot longer.
