If you own a home in Toronto with original leaded glass windows, you've probably noticed two things: they're beautiful, and they're drafty. Stained glass encapsulation solves the second problem without touching the first.
What Is Encapsulation?
Encapsulation is the process of sandwiching your existing leaded glass panel between two panes of modern tempered glass, creating a sealed insulated unit. The result looks identical from the inside the colours, the lead lines, the character of the glass are all unchanged but the window now performs like a modern double-pane unit.
How the Process Works
The original stained glass panel is carefully removed from its frame and cleaned. Two custom-cut panes of clear glass are fitted on either side, with the leaded panel sealed between them using a weathertight perimeter. The completed unit is reinstalled in the original frame. From the outside, your window looks exactly as it always did.
The Four Benefits
- Thermal insulation the sealed air gap significantly reduces heat loss, noticeably improving comfort near the window during Toronto winters.
- Weather protection the outer panes shield the original leaded panel from direct rain, snow, and UV exposure, extending its lifespan considerably.
- Home security an encapsulated window has three layers of glass instead of one. For front door windows and entrance sidelights, this adds meaningful resistance.
- Structural support the outer panes reduce stress on the lead itself, helping prevent future sagging in older or fragile panels.
Is My Window a Good Candidate?
Most leaded glass windows can be encapsulated. The main exception is a window in poor structural condition in that case, restoration should come first. If your window has broken glass, failing lead, or significant sagging, it's worth restoring before encapsulating so the panel inside the unit is in good condition for the long term.
Front door windows, transom windows, sidelights, and arch windows are among the most common encapsulation projects in Toronto. These are typically the windows most exposed to weather and most visible from the street, making the investment both practical and worthwhile.
Sunday Projects provides stained glass encapsulation for homeowners across Toronto. If you're unsure whether your window is a good candidate, a free consultation is the best place to start.
